Photodynamic Laser Therapy
Photodynamic Laser Therapy has seen increasing usage over the last several years. Many individuals are looking for alternative ways to reduce the visible signs of aging and often flock to new techniques and technologies. This therapy is used for a variety of medical treatments, including various skin ailments. Photodynamic therapy uses a photosynthesizing agent (a drug) in combination with specific types of laser or light sources to produce a form of oxygen that destroys damaged cells. Different wavelengths and different photosynthesizers react differently so various combinations are used on specific parts of the body.
Regular patients of Dermatology offices have been using this from of skin therapy on their faces since its creation. But what about other parts of the body? No area of the body aside from the face shows the aging process perhaps more than our hands do. Our hands are our most-used, every-day tool. They do a major amount of work for us during our lifetimes and as a result of the heavy amount of usage they often show significant signs of aging prior to the rest of our bodies.
To combat the visible appearance of aging in hands, patients are using a variety of techniques across the broad spectrum of Dermatology treatments. Fillers are used to increase volume and reshape hands that tend to deflate as we age. Fillers will make the veins and tendons of age less visible. As Photodynamic laser therapy has become more popular, it too has begun to be used to treat the hands.
Thanks to is versatility and highly localized procedure, this therapy can target specific areas of problems on the skin, thus not effecting surrounding skin and cells and allowing for proper healing. This is excellent for various skin conditions, along with aging and sun spots. The therapy will improve discoloration while also reducing and smoothing the appearance of fine lines in the hands, much in the way it works on facial wrinkles and other issues.
Patients should expect to need multiple treatments for the therapy to be most effective. They should also be aware of the effects of photodynamic therapy. Often times any brown spots will appear darker for a brief period of time, which will then turn into a light scabbing. The skin will turn pink as it begins the healing process. Skin will sometimes turn red and will often have the look and feel of a sunburn. During this period sun exposure should be avoided and only moisturizers approved by your dermatologist are permitted.
Other Photodynamic Therapy Usages
Photodynamic therapy has also been successfully used in the treatment of scars. It is particularly effective on acne scarring but can be used to treat any type of scar anywhere on the body with varying levels of success. A course of multiple treatments is often necessary. Photodynamic laser therapy along with other traditional and cosmetic dermatological treatments should only be performed by licensed and reputable dermatology offices. Do your research and work with a top local dermatologist in order to get the best results for your skin.
