Why Choose A Soap Making Recipe Using Glycerin? by Kim Allarie
If your eyebrows shoot up at the thought of a manufacturer removing glycerin from their soap products, which creates a drying effect, and then selling the glycerin to their customers in skin moisturizers, then you may be ready to try making your own glycerin soap. If you make it at home, you can save yourself the cost of both the harsh commercial soaps and their accompanying expensive moisturizing creams. And in the process, you'll use a soap making recipe that is a bit outside the normal type of recipe.
A soap making recipe designed explicitly to retain the glycerin in your soap is not quite the same as a regular recipe for making homemade soap. Sometimes you don't even need a recipe at all, and can just boil down previously existing homemade soaps, while adding one particular extra ingredient to the soap base. And that little extra is alcohol. Occasionally, depending on the original composition of the soap, you might also add extra glycerin or sugar.
This kind of soap is normally produced from pre-existing soap, whether it's a handmade soap, chunks and shavings from leftover pieces of commercial soap, or purchased flakes. This soap must be fully softened and liquefied in something with a high amount of alcohol.
Where people get this alcohol will differ, and in some cases will be dependent upon which alcohol mixtures are permissible in their state. A grain alcohol that's 95 percent ethanol works, and so will a rubbing alcohol that's at least 70 percent ethanol. Yet the common rubbing alcohol, with isopropyl alcohol as opposed to ethanol, won't work well. Many people also use vodka.
The soap is continuously heated and then remelted anywhere from once to four times. If the soap base was originally created at home by using a soap making recipe, then it will likely already have enough glycerin in it, and will just need boiling down with the help of the alcohol. But even then, a certain amount of sugar or extra glycerin might be added. And those ingredients will definitely be put in when using commercial soaps as a base. The aim is to produce a soft, moisturizing soap that is translucent, and which will not have the same harsh, drying effects as the less healthy, commercially manufactured soaps.
