The Secret to Cleaner Laundry by Brenda Gillette
As someone who has a large family I know what a struggle it can be to keep up with the never ending pile in the laundry room. It seems that as soon as you finish one load there is another and another right behind it. And the varying degrees of dirtiness are astounding as well, I mean, how do kids get grass stains on the necks of their shirts?
If you are like me and can't necessarily afford the top of the line humungous capacity washers that are on the market consider the Bosh line of stackable washers and dryers. Not only do they have a decent capacity wash load, but they are stackable front loaders with Energy Star rating that will help you save money on the electric and water bill as well. Space is always an issue in my house so being able to stack the washer and dryer allows my laundry room to almost double in size and not have to spread the laundry out all over my living room when it is time to fold it.
There are two models featured on the Bosch website: the Axxis, and Axxis Plus. Both are equipped with stainless steel drums and a unique raindrop pattern that resists water stains and is snag free. With several temperature and speed settings it can be a little intimidating to know what setting will get your clothes the cleanest, so let me tell you the 10 easy secrets to cleaner clothes.
1. Obviously a good washer is essential. Bosch washers easily cover this criteria.
2. Hot water kills more germs, and removes dirt better than warm or cold water.
3. Soft water gets clothes cleaner when using soap rather than detergent. If you have hard water you can purchase water softening packaged powders to remove minerals from hard water that will combine with soap to form a scum leaving clothes looking grey.
4. Soap vs Detergent: If you have hard water opt for the detergent as soap will leave scum. A basic detergent will work for most clothes but liquid detergent are made especially for cold water washing, so a powder would be your better bet.
5. Suds damage your washing machine and makes the soap difficult to get out of the clothes, too many suds are not necessary for front loading machines like the Bosch models.
6. Be sure to use the right amount of detergent, follow the directions on the container, if you use too much you waste money and get suds, and if not enough white clothes may turn grey or not get thoroughly cleaned.
7. Only use liquid bleach on items such as bath towels, sheets and color-fast prints. You need no more than a ½ cup for front-loading machines.
8. Fabric softeners make clothes soft and fluffy and reduce static cling. You can use either liquid softener during the final rinse cycle or fabric softener sheets in the dryer.
9. Don't overload the washer, I know a bigger load means you are done faster, but overloading your washer will result in poor washing. Load the washer with loosely folded clothing about ¾ of the way full.
10. If you have detergent related allergies in the family you can replace your softener with ½ cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle, vinegar effectively breaks down laundry detergent and naturally softens your laundry.
