Top Tips for a Healthy Glowing Skin.   by Kate Waters

We all want to have young and healthy glowing skin, but do not always take the necessary steps to protect and nurture it. The skin is our largest organ performing several functions. It primarily protects us from damaging foreign substances and it also serves as the transfer point for the release of toxins from the body. Therefore our skin is vital to our health and well being.

If you find yourself coveting the gorgeous skin of the fashion models and celebrities that you see in magazines, then here are some tips that will help you to achieve your own beautiful healthy glowing skin.

Tip 1: Drink Water.

It is often said that the simplest way to clear and supple skin is to drink plenty of water. Water has long been considered the most effective natural treatment for any skin condition as it is naturally pH neutral. It prevents dehydration which in turn increases the production of sebum or oil from the sebaceous glands, leading to blocked pores and dullness. Your skin needs water in order for it to function properly and doctors and nutritionists recommend a daily intake of between 6 to 8 glasses of water per day.

Tip 2: Watch Your Diet.

Nutrition plays a vital role in the health of your skin. No amount of expensive skin care products, will achieve healthy glowing skin without help from your diet. You should try to eat fish which are high in oils that will nourish your skin. Ground flaxseeds are also an excellent source of omega-three fatty acids, which promote good skin health. Try adding them to your breakfast cereal for a healthy skin start to your day. Vitamin A is essential for healthy glowing skin, so your diet should include plenty of dark orange (carrots, sweet potatoes, winter squash) and dark green (broccoli, spinach, kale) vegetables , all of which are high in vitamin A. Finally Vitamin E also helps to promote great skin and nuts such as hazelnuts and almonds are a great source.

Tip 3: Consider Exfoliants.

Many experts say that exfoliating your skin is another great way to attain beautiful healthy glowing skin. So try to invest in a good body exfoliant or 'loofah', as these are great for getting rid of dead skin cells from the body. This should be done once or twice a week to free the skin to breathe properly. What's more, exfoliants also help to prevent in-growing hair from developing.

However, you should avoid using any body exfoliant on facial skin, especially around the eyes. The main reason for this precaution is that facial tissue is more sensitive and finer than those tissues of the body and are more easily damaged.

Today, there is a myriad of skin exfoliating sponges on the market, as well as a number of really good exfoliant gels that are especially formulated for facial skin. However anyone suffering from acne should not apply exfoliating gels or sponges, as these may aggravate the acne infection. There are however special skin peeling treatments that can be applied, but your skin specialist should be consulted first.

Tip 4: Maintain a Healthy Facial Care Routine.

When it comes to facial skin care, getting into a healthy beauty routine is essential. Most experts today recommend that you cleanse, moisturize and tone your skin twice every day. When cleaning, always remember to cleanse your neck as well as your face and apply a moisturizer or neck cream after.

Before going to bed at night, always remember to remove all make up. Cleanse your skin before you go to sleep, no matter how tired you may feel. During the night, the skin goes through a process of elimination and cannot breathe properly if it is clogged with make up. You may also find that sleeping with your make up on will cause your skin to 'break out' in spots.

When it comes to shaving for men, some men may experience shaving rashes. For many, these rashes lower their self-esteem, but this is actually not a major skin problem and there are a lot ways to avoid rashes. Perhaps one of the best is to make sure that when shaving, the razor strokes follow the direction of hair growth.

Also, scarring on the face can sometimes be unsightly. To heal a scar, it is recommended that you use jasmine or neroli essential oils diluted in carrier oil. This is deemed effective for the elimination of more minor facial scars and it even works on stretch marks too.

When it comes to bruises, there are arnica creams and ointments out there that are useful in healing bruises. It is also interesting to know that one way of dealing with bruises fast and effectively is to use Vicks Vaporub on the affected area.

Tip5: Look after Your Feet.

When it comes to skin care, the feet are often neglected. So if you cannot have a professional pedicure, then just fill a basin with warm water and add your favorite essential oil. Soak your feet for about fifteen minutes, then, dry them and apply a rough skin remover onto them. Rinse this off and dry you feet well and if you like add some body lotion to your feet for an easy and quick fix final pedicure.

Tip 6: Tie Your Fringe Out of Your Face.

If you are prone to oily hair it is a good idea to tie your fringe out of your face for a few hours each day. This will prevent spots from forming on the forehead as a result of oily deposits from the hair being transferred to the skin which could eventually causes the skin to develop acne or similar disorders.

Tip 7: Avoid too Much Sun Exposure.

One of the most common precautions when it comes to skin care is avoiding too much exposure to the sun. As you may know, over exposure to sunlight causes sunburn and long term damage. Current sunblocks only block out the UVB rays but still let in harmful UVA rays, so it is wise to cover up before venturing into the hands of Apollo. If possible, use a wide brimmed hat while tending your garden to keep the sun from your face.

Tip 8: Exercise.

Aside from considering a healthy diet, exercising your body also helps you achieve healthy glowing skin. Note that proper exercise does not only keep the body fit by regulating the oxygen but it also improves the glow of the skin as well.

Tip 9: Take Plenty of Rest.

Lack of sleep causes stress to the body which in turn causes the adrenal cortex to convert adrenal androgens to the hormone testosterone in male and females, which in turn results in overactive sebaceous glands. These adrenal androgens are released causing a double amount of testosterone, causing the face to be oily, while other skin areas of the body may remain dry from dehydration. So, taking proper rest that includes 6 to 8 hours of undisturbed sleep daily is the best way to rejuvenate the skin.

Tip 10: Other Helpful Tips for Great Skin.

There are a lot of home remedies for skin care. One of the most commonly suggested is blending egg whites and honey and then applying it to the face, many believe that this makes your skin smooth and helps to reduce wrinkles.

Also, you could try blending turmeric powder with milk and applying it to your face. This specifically removes excess tan and is said to assist in reducing the growth of facial hair. Once applied, scrub it off with a good face scrub and then wash with tepid water.

Some experts also recommend blending oatmeal along with curds and tomato juice for facial care. This should be kept on for 20 minutes and then washed off with tepid water. This also helps keep the skin light.

Did you know that cucumber juice is an excellent astringent for a beautiful, smooth skin? Applying cucumber juice on the face helps tighten the skin pores. However, it should be washed off after 15 minutes for the best skin results.

Finally, you can use glycolic acid (mild peel) and trichloracetic acid (medium peel solutions) but always consult an expert first. These peels should be safe as they are not overly aggressive and do not necessitate time off from work or social activities and will soften and refresh the skin.

Your skin is a window to your state of health and is one of your most precious assets. So, for great healthy glowing skin, start developing healthy skin care habits that will protect and nurture your skin from within.
