Experience The Power Of The Rare Earth Magnet by Marie Winston
Though their name would lead you to believe otherwise, rare earth are not rare at all. These "permanent" magnets are manufactured using metal alloys (made from rare earth elements) that are as common as iron and tin. The term "rare earth" was derived from scarce earth minerals, which are dispersed within the earth's crust making their collection uneconomical. Unlike transition metals, the 17 rare earth elements are ferromagnetic and can be magnetized. It is the compound of these metals that creates the two types of rare earth, which are superior in performance (up to 3 times stronger) than their conventional ceramic (ferrite) or alnico counterparts.
Neodymium Magnets
Neodymium were invented in 1983 by General Motors, Sumitomo Special Metals and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. A compound of neodymium (a rare earth element), and iron and boron (transitional metals), they are sometimes referred to as the NIB magnets. These are prone to oxidation and in order to stave this vulnerability, they are typically coated with epoxy resin or parylene, or plated with non-corrosive metals such as nickel, zinc, tin, and even gold. Because they have low Curie temperature resistance, neodymium have reduced magnetic performance at temperatures as low as 212 degrees Fahrenheit.
The cost of NIB magnets has significantly dropped since the early 1990s, making them much more accessible to businesses and individuals. Available in simple shapes (i.e., rings, blocks and disks) and a variety of sizes, their high-strength properties are useful for a variety of purposes. NIB are found in products ranging from common household items such as self-powered flashlights and cordless tools (with magnetized motors), microphones and audio speakers, and computer hard drives, to aircraft and wind turbine generators. Today these are even seen in children's playrooms in the form of magnetic building sets or in wooden toys. Though affordable and the most powerful permanent magnet known, this type of rare earth magnet is inferior to the samarium-cobalt magnet.
Samarium-Cobalt Magnets
The samarium-cobalt compound (samarium, cobalt and iron) was discovered by in 1966 by Dr. Karl J. Strnat at U.S. Air Force Materials Laboratory. Acclaimed for their high power and Curie temperature resistance, samarium-cobalt magnets are used for industrial equipment and devices that have huge magnetizing fields and operate at very high temperatures (up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit). Additionally, they are much more resistant to oxidation than the neodymium magnet. These are less commonly employed than the NIB magnet due to their limited breadth of application, their extreme brittleness (and propensity to chip or shatter), as well as significantly higher cost.
Rare Earth Magnet Properties
All magnets are measured by a set of standard properties: remanence (strength), Curie temperature (temperature at which the magnet loses magnetism), coercivity (resistance to demagnetization), and energy product (energy density). The neodymium and samarium-cobalt magnets have high remanence, coercivity and energy product, yet have lower Curie temperatures, which make them incredibly powerful and ideal for a broad range of uses. Because of their extraordinary magnetic strength, these magnets must be handled with great care. Even very small magnets (less than 1 inch square) have been known to cause serious injury or death by pinching body parts. In addition, if a magnet gets close to another, its magnetic draw can cause a forceful collision and shatter the magnets and/or nearby objects, and larger magnets can fracture under thermal shock. Their magnetic fields can even erase magnetic strip on a credit cards or media on a computer hard disk.
With their massive power in a very small package, rare earth magnets are an amazing creation.
