What You Can Do About Skin Tags by Lisa Marie
This article discusses skin tags, also known as acrochordons, what they are, some facts about them, and what can be done to get rid of them.
Skin tags are a very common dermatological affliction affecting adults and children. They are small flesh colored skin protrusions that hang from a stalk. They are really common and may occur more often in people with large breasts or people who are heavyset. They can occur almost anywhere on the body, but routinely occur in these common locations: under the arms, on the eyelids, on the neck, in the groin, and under the breasts.
Acrochordons are harmless and present no medical dangers to speak of. They are not contagious to other people. Also, In addition, they are not painful to the touch, but depending on where they are, they can become snagged in zippers, seat belts, or clothes. Some people are more prone to developing them. They do tend to increase in frequency after middle age.
These growths can be unsightly in the cosmetic sense if they are visible on the arms or face or eyes. Because of this, people want to get rid of them, and there are several ways to accomplish this goal.
A dermatologist or other physician can be consulted. They can remove acrochordons with a liquid nitrogen that freezes the tags off, or by cauterizing or burning the growths off. Depending on the size of the growth, local anesthesia may or may not be used for the removal. Be aware that visiting the doctor can be expensive, and removing skin tags may or may not be covered by insurance, so be sure to check with your health care
provider first.
There are several creams available over the counter that claim to remove acrochordons. Be aware that there are no creams or topical ointments that are approved officially for the removal of these growths. Basically this means you use them at their own risk, and there may be side effects such as redness or irritation to the skin.
There are some popular home remedies that people use to remove their skin tags safely and effectively. Tea tree oil is a natural, essential oil that can be applied to clean skin and rubbed onto the skin tag. This is to be done three times a day. After
a few days, the skin tag will dry up and fall off. Dermasil is a brand name natural remedy made from ricinus communis, thuja occidentalis and melaleuca alternifolia. Another natural method is to apply a paste of Castor oil mixed with baking soda to the skin tag.
Skin tags can be removed at home by tying a thin string very tightly around the base of the acrochordon. The goal is to cut off the circulation to the skin protrusion. After a few days or weeks, the skin tag will blacken and eventually just fall off. This method may be a little painful when you are tying the string. Dental floss, fishing line, or thread can be used for this.
Yet another way to get rid of the skin growths is to use a very sticky tape, such as duct tape. The tape is cut into a small square to completely cover the skin tag and surrounding adjacent skin. Adhere the tape to the skin while pressing down on it to ensure very good adherence to the skin growth. After a few days, the tape will loosen. Now peel back the tape slowly. If the skin tag did not come off after the first try, use a fresh square of duct tape and just repeat the steps again.
