The Coonawarra (Aboriginal for wild honeysuckle) region of southern Australia is well-known for strong Cabernet Sauvignon wines. Penley Estate Above The Moon Ros??| 2007 13.five % alcohol about $9.50
Let's commence using the marketing and advertising materials. Penley's ros??| is really a quirky cuvee of Merlot, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay [see below], and Cabernet Sauvignon. They get probably the most out of their all-star lineup, crafting a vivid, refreshing wine with layers of strawberry, plum, and cassis fruit flavors. Serve this at your following Sunday afternoon barbecue celebration and your close friends will likely be 'Over the Moon".
According to the producer, the Merlot is floral, the Pinot Noir is strawberry-like, and also the Cabernet Sauvignon supplies cassis along with a little dry tannin. In spite of these marketing supplies the producer tends to make no mention of Chardonnay grapes. I started by sipping this wine alone. It was very sweet with practically a candy-like flavor, but with refreshing acidity. The wine's sweetness melded using the chicken's sweetness and it did a superb job of cutting the grease. I got bubble gum also as strawberries. The finish wasn't bad.
The second meal was cold barbecued chicken with potato salad, coleslaw, and eggplant inside a tomato and vinegar sauce. Strawberry was the predominant flavor. This should be what a strawberry wine cooler tastes like but I confess with pride that I'll in no way know for positive. The potato salad made the ros??| taste round but bubble gum resurfaced only to disappear once again when faced together with the coleslaw. The effective eggplant muted the wine.
The final meal centered around an easy omelet. The wine was great and fruity. This was a fairly good combination. Canned palm hearts muted the wine as did some spicy tortilla chips.
I finished the tasting with two cheeses. The initial was a somewhat sweet whipped cream cheese. The ros??| was fruity but quite brief. In the presence of a marbled cheddar cheese this liquid retained its fruit and was somewhat longer.
Final verdict. I'd not acquire this wine again. It didn't send me above the moon but may have got me more than the crack within the sidewalk. I'll be tasting some large Australian reds relatively soon.
